Berliner Express — travel post

Travel journal from my trip to Berlin |  Diário de viagem da minha ida a Berlim

I'm above the clouds.

The plane just reached cruise altitude and my ears are already filled with the music I set aside for this trip, the hopeful and joyful beats of Bruno Mars (who would have known!) of Whitney Houston, of Carrie Manolakos. It's good company. It keeps me awake long enough to get food, otherwise the lexotan would already have me snoring.

My eye is better. I think it helps that I didn't sleep — so it didn't have time to swell while I was lying down, and I can almost see properly. I'm still not happy about having to wear glasses the whole time I'm in Berlin, but luckily the darling likes it.

---

Fazem-me companhia.

Flying at sunrise is one of my favorite things. When you're above the clouds, the whole horizon is pink; it's ethereal and gorgeous and promising. It's like the sky is giving me my favorite color so I can calm down and enjoy the trip, avoid the antics of traveling by plane a few years ago — when the fear was paralyzing. Now it's not. It's just relaxing

The plane got off delayed, an hour an a half. I already missed my connection to Berlin, from Frankfurt, but the lady at the airport was kind enough to save me a seat on the next flight. I wish I had seen her name so I could write an e-mail to the company. I told her I was nervous, flying alone, and asked her to help me so I wouldn't be stuck in Frankfurt for a whole day. She was incredibly sweet. More people in airports should be like her — it makes traveling so much easier.

---

O avião saiu atrasado, hora e meia.

Even though I'm not terrified anymore, I am almost always clutching the tiny pouch in which I carry a rosary and a tiny statue of the Virgin Mary. Everyone with my family travels with this pouch — it has gone from faith to superstition in no-time. My grandmother bought a new one some time ago, but we kicked it aside. We don't travel without our usual 'Nossa Senhora'.

--

I just can't wait to get there. Frankfurt was fine, quick. Now I need to be in Berlin, right away!
--

Finally in Berlin! Let the fun begin! And how I missed these streets! Oh. I'm only realizing it now.

Finalmente em Berlim! Que a diversão comece! E como eu tinha saudades destas ruas. Oh.

DAY TWO || DIA 2

On our way to a tall building so we can have a view of the city. Lina wanted to take me up the TV Tower, at first, but I was scared so she gave me this alternative. It's surprising how I wasn't scared of the heights anymore. I mean. I didn't look down. I just pretended I was on the ground floor. Does that count as beating your fear?

A group of portuguese students was in the foyer. A soft 'com licença' [excuse me] escaped my mouth when I heard them talk, so the teacher was asking another kid in a low voice 'is she portuguese?'. I bought my ticket and said that I was, wished them a good holiday. They were from the South, most definitely, from their accent.

Below the building there were still vestiges of the Berlinale. I adored the slot machine bear. It's all hand painted! It looked like it was real, from a meter away!

Por baixo do edifício ainda havia vestígios do Festival de Cinema de Berlim (Berlinale). Eu adorei o urso-slot-machine. É pintado à mão! Parecia real, a coisa de um metro!

Before lunch, we got to see a concert at the foyer of the Berlin Philharmonic. It was wonderful — the house was packed and even though we couldn't take pictures inside, I took these before it started. A pianist and a violinist played a few pieces and they were wonderful. It was such a good, peaceful feeling. I was so glad to be there, at that moment. At every moment of the day, basically.

After the concert it was time for the old National Gallery. We saw so much amazing European art. And I got to see one of my favorite Caravaggios! I geeked in front of it for about ten minutes, took every possible picture. It's refreshing to know that they allow pictures in every museum, as long as you don't use flash. I wish things were like that in Portugal — but no, we tend to be too greedy in our attempt to sell the musem art in the shops — and end up not doing either.

Day two ends with dinner at home and tv shows and the comfort of a bed. This is my kind of day. And this is my kind of company.

E a melhor companhia possível.
